FAQ
Common questions about registration, makeup, consultations, ceremonies, volunteering, visits, and your account
Registration & WaitlistSee the manual →
How do I register for a course?
Go to the "Register" page, find the course you want, and click through to the registration form. Select whether you're a new or returning student, fill in an emergency contact, then submit. The system will immediately confirm your spot or place you on the waitlist if the class is full.
Is there a registration deadline?
Yes. Self-service registration closes once the course's 5th session's day begins — so the latest you can register is the day before that 5th session. This is because joining any later leaves too few sessions, even counting every possible makeup, to realistically meet the attendance requirement for completion. Courses with fewer than 5 total sessions have no such deadline; contact the monastery directly for special circumstances.
Will I receive a confirmation after registering?
Yes — a confirmation email is sent to your account email address (or your notification email if you've set one in your profile). It includes the class schedule, location, and key reminders.
What is the waitlist, and how does it work?
When a course is full, you're automatically added to the waitlist, ordered by registration time (account age breaks ties). If a confirmed student cancels, the system promotes the next person on the list and sends a confirmation email — no action needed on your part.
Can I register for more than one course at the same time?
Yes, there's no limit. But whether a course requires a prerequisite is set individually per course — the system checks whether you've completed that specific prerequisite course.
How do I cancel my registration?
Log in and cancel from the "My Progress" page — a cancellation confirmation email is sent either way. If you were confirmed, cancelling automatically promotes the next waitlisted student; cancelling a waitlisted registration has no effect on anyone else.
Absences & Makeup SessionsSee the manual →
I missed a class. Can I make it up?
Yes. Confirmed students who miss a session can book a makeup class within the makeup window — the default is 30 days after the course's last session (configurable per course).
How do I book a makeup session?
Log in and go to the "Makeup" page, choose the class you missed, and pick an open slot on the calendar. Slots must be booked at least 24 hours before they start, and the missed class must have ended at least 3 days ago before its makeup opens up — no same-day or next-day requests.
Are makeup spots limited?
Yes. Makeup slots are in-person or online, each fixed at 2 hours: in-person holds at most 6 people at a time, online holds at most 2, and capacity is tracked separately from regular enrollment. Only students registered for the online mode can book online makeup slots.
Can I still apply after the makeup deadline?
No — the makeup window closes automatically on a set date after the final class. Once it expires, no further bookings can be accepted.
Is there a fee for makeup sessions?
No. All classes and makeup sessions at the monastery are completely free of charge. Donations are gratefully welcomed.
Attendance & Check-inSee the manual →
How do I check in for class?
Show your check-in QR code on your phone for staff to scan, or self-scan the classroom's QR code where that's supported. The window opens 1 hour before the session starts. Self-scan closes when the session ends; if you miss that, staff can still check you in up to 20 minutes after the session ends.
How is being late recorded?
Checking in within 20 minutes of the start is recorded as "Late"; beyond 20 minutes is "Very Late" — both computed automatically from timing, not set manually.
Where can I see my attendance record?
Log in and go to "My Progress" to see your attendance (Present/Late/Very Late/Absent) for every course, along with every makeup record.
Course SystemSee the manual →
What levels are offered, and are there prerequisites?
Four levels: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and Sutra Study. Whether a course requires a prerequisite is set individually per course by the monastery — the system checks whether you've completed that specific prerequisite course. Today's settings usually follow the level order.
Which course should a first-time student take?
Start with the Beginner class. No prior experience with meditation or Buddhism is required — the course is open to anyone who wants to learn.
What does "completing" a course mean?
Once your attendance reaches the required percentage (90% of total sessions by default) and every session has ended, the system automatically marks your registration "Completed" and sends a notification. Completion is required to register for the next-level course. For special circumstances, contact the monastery directly.
What is the difference between online and in-person classes?
The curriculum is identical. Online classes are held over video conferencing; in-person classes require attending at the monastery. Spots are counted separately for each format, so please choose the one that fits your situation when registering.
Are courses free?
Yes — all meditation courses are offered completely free of charge. Donations are welcomed and support the monastery's mission.
Consultation BookingSee the manual →
What is a consultation?
A scheduled slot for discussing your practice one-on-one or in a small group with a monastic — "Individual" (just you) or "Group" (with other students, usually 2 per slot), each available in-person or online. Any logged-in student can book — there's no additional eligibility requirement.
Can I cancel a consultation?
Yes — from the "Consultation" page, find your booking and click "Cancel". There's no time restriction, though cancelling early frees up the spot for someone else. Reminders go out 24 hours and 1 hour before.
Do I need to prepare anything to book one?
You can optionally note a topic you'd like to discuss so the monastic can prepare, but it's not required.
Ceremony RegistrationSee the manual →
What is ceremony registration?
It lets you sign up ahead of time for a ceremony session, so the monastery can plan the venue and preparations around headcount. Logged-in students can register directly, or continue as a guest with name, email, and phone.
What's the difference between registering as a guest vs. logged in?
Guest registration needs no account, but gets no confirmation email and no self-service cancel link — contact the monastery directly for changes. Registering while logged in lets you view, edit, and cancel it yourself anytime.
Will I get a reminder for a ceremony I registered for?
Not currently — ceremony registration sends no confirmation or reminder email at all, unlike course registration, makeup, or consultations. Keep track of your session time yourself.
Volunteer ServiceSee the manual →
What is volunteer work at the monastery?
A community service program organized into 11 groups (Course Support, Kitchen, Eco, Shrine, Secretary, Reception, Chanting, Emcee, Photography, A/V Tech, Decoration), each with its own training sessions and shifts.
How do I sign up for a shift?
You first need that group's certification, granted by an admin — it's never automatic from signing up for or attending training. You can freely register for training sessions in the meantime; whether a certification is granted is always an admin's call.
Can I cancel a shift?
Shift cancellations require at least 24 hours' notice. Training registrations have no time limit, unless that session has already been marked attended.
Visit BookingSee the manual →
Do I need to log in to book a visit?
No — guests just fill in name, phone, and email. If you're logged in, your name and email are pre-filled. One email address can only have one active booking at a time.
How do I cancel a visit booking?
The confirmation email has a personal cancel link — click it, no login or password needed. If you booked while logged in, you can also cancel directly from the "Visit" page.
Account & NotificationsSee the manual →
How do I update my profile information?
Log in and click your name in the top-right corner to reach "My Profile". You can update your name, phone number, notification email, age range, and more from there.
What kinds of notifications will I receive?
The system sends email depending on what you use: confirmations/cancellations for registrations, makeup, consultations, volunteer work, and visits, plus check-in confirmations, course completion, and reminders before a course/session starts. Account-security emails (password reset, email change) and every booking confirmation cannot be unsubscribed.
How do I unsubscribe from announcement emails?
Go to "My Profile" to manage push notification settings and opt out of general announcement emails. Note: booking confirmations, waitlist promotions, and other critical system emails are not affected by this setting.
I forgot my password. How do I reset it?
Click "Forgot Password" on the login page, enter your email address, and a reset link will be sent to your inbox — valid for 1 hour. If 5 failed login attempts locked your account for 15 minutes, note that resetting your password does not lift the lock early; you still need to wait it out before the new password works.
What's the QR code on my profile page for?
It's your personal identity QR code. If you have a monastery-issued student ID on file, it encodes that number directly; volunteers can scan it to look up your registration and verify your identity, typically for on-site check-in. It's permanent and never expires.
