To sign up for a shift in a given volunteer group, you first need that group's "certification" — certifications are granted manually by an admin, never automatically from signing up for or attending training.
Training sessions can be freely registered for; the page shows how many training sessions you've attended against the number that group requires (1 to 10, depending on the group) — but this is only a reference number; whether a certification is actually granted is always an admin's call.
There's no time limit on cancelling a training registration — unless that session has already been marked as attended, in which case it can no longer be cancelled.
